There are two gateways... and only one of which I can remember and that was
N6QMY. I forgot the other one as he refused traffic from countries not
allowing 3rd party traffic (IE: The UK for example). N6QMY refused to
register me as GW0TJO but liked other G0's (I can only assume I am doing
something wrong *SOB*) Still, if someone can reproduce the instructions for
N6QMY again, I would also be very much in appreciation.

Difficult ! How available are US stamps in other countries?
As some DXpeditions originate in countries other than the US, this means
that we all need ready access to valid postage stamps of several
countries, and also to know the correct value.
I thought this was what the IRC was supposed to fix
: I don't expect people to include "green stamps" ($1 bills) in addition, to
: help with QSL expenses -- it's very, very nice, the few people who do that,

: QSL cards, that's part of the DX-pedition cost.
This is rare indeed in DXpeditions, some seem to want to make a
profit on cards, most seem to want all their card-related costs
covering. Those who wish to EXCHANGE cards are a delight to meet.
: But I can't afford 2 weeks on the air at $65/hour in postage costs! The cards
: that are coming in direct without return postage will probably be answered via
: the bureau.
The bureau is fine, anyone wanting a card in a hurry is trying to
impose extra work on you for their own advantage, expecting them to
cover the extra costs seems fair and proper to me.
Just think of what will happen to those cards....
They will be valued more highly than the actual QSOs
They will be displayed and flaunted
They will be used in applications for awards (to be displayed and
flaunted)
I think that a lot of this hobby revolves around cardboard and
postage rather than radio equipment and propagation. I could just
imagine the stir caused if I did a non-QSL card DXpedition ;-)

Subject: Standard C520 - CTCSS
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Again a technical question...
Recently I installed a CTCSS tone squelch circuit in my C 520 dual-band handheld.
At first, the tone squelch seems to operate correctly.
After some time, however, I noticed that I missed some stations which used the
same sub-tone...
It occurs only on 70 cm, and sometimes the stations can be heard intermittently.
I verified the tone squelch sensitivity by applying an accurate signal from a
synthesized signal generator (HP8663A) with the appropiate sub-tone modulated
on it. The deviation on VHF has to be set to 300 Hz for opening the tone squelch,
on UHF, however, it has to be set to 700 Hz...
This may be a little too high, and might be the cause for this prblem.
This indicates that the stations which can be heard have a relatively high
CTCSS deviation.
I tried to cure the problem, but there are no related adjustments in the set for
correcting this.
I verified the detector circuit (linearity) and also checked that the receiver
frequency accuracy is correct.
Did anyone have similar problems with the C520 and the CTCSS circuit??
What is the nominal CTCSS sensitivity for a receiver expressed in the deviation
of the sub-tone??
Please help...

It's funny to read this subject line. I can recall back in the 60's
when Wayne was at war with the ARRL, and how his editorials stirred
folks up; people were cancelling their subscriptions back then.
Regardless of the cancellations his magazine survived.
My collection started with issue #2 or 3 - can't recall - gave it
to the Lockheed ARC.

This explains the delay. The FCC had to allocate a new pool of callsigns.

I too would be interested in this. I guess it would be a fairly weighty tome
... :)
Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to tell me of HR's end. I first saw
it at tech college just after I gained my novice ticket. It was much more
interesting than the local mag's in vk at the time, and most of my lunch times
were spent reading HR. I feel that I learnt a lot just by reading the
technical articles.
As for vk mag's ... we have "Electronics Australia", "Amateur Radio
Action", and the Wireless Institute of Australia's "Amateur Radio". There are
the overseas pub's, of course, and probably some smaller mag's with which I'm
not familiar. The following are purely my *opinions* ...
I first started reading EA as a kid in the late 60's. It was full of articles
written by amateurs. In the late 70's it turned into a "consumer electronics /
hi-fi amplifier and build-this-wonderful-LED-chaser-kit" type mag, and
subsequently lost my readership. It has retained a leaning towards the
technical professional, and often features articles which range far and wide
over the electrical engineering disciplines. The "new" editor (who was on
the staff back in the 60's) was recently following a policy of trying to bring
the amateurs back into the fold.
To me it appears that ARA tends to cater for the contester / dxer types. It
features some technical articles, although I've found some glaring errors in a
few. It also seems to do a roaring trade in rig reviews. I rarely read it now.
In the last few years AR underwent a change whereby some issues are now
absolutely packed with technical articles. There is a general, broad
technical content ranging from "how to" through "homebrew" to "theoretical"
-the majority of articles are in the former categories. There seems to always
be an antenna article of some description, and over the years it has run some
good construction and theory / education sequences. (I once saw an integral
operator in AR. :) ) It is a vast improvement on parts of the 80's when most
of the time I barely read it -despite being a member of the WIA. It features
good columns run by dedicated mode enthusiasts, and often caters for the
humerous side as well. As a WIA vehicle it deals with the politics /
regulatory / representative side of amateur radio, and provides a forum for
often-lively discussion.
