  51. There are two gateways... and only one of which I can remember and that was
  52. N6QMY.  I forgot the other one as he refused traffic from countries not
  53. allowing 3rd party traffic (IE: The UK for example).  N6QMY refused to
  54. register me as GW0TJO but liked other G0's (I can only assume I am doing
  55. something wrong *SOB*)  Still, if someone can reproduce the instructions for
  56. N6QMY again, I would also be very much in appreciation.

  203. As some DXpeditions originate in countries other than the US, this means
  204. that we all need ready access to valid postage stamps of several
  205. countries, and also to know the correct value.

  252. Recently I installed a CTCSS tone squelch circuit in my C 520 dual-band handheld.
  253. At first, the tone squelch seems to operate correctly.
  254. After some time, however, I noticed that I missed some stations which used the
  255. same sub-tone...
  256. It occurs only on 70 cm, and sometimes the stations can be heard intermittently.
  257. I verified the tone squelch sensitivity by applying an accurate signal from a
  258. synthesized signal generator (HP8663A) with the appropiate sub-tone modulated
  259. on it. The deviation on VHF has to be set to 300 Hz for opening the tone squelch,
  260. on UHF, however, it has to be set to 700 Hz...
  261. This may be a little too high, and might be the cause for this prblem.
  262. This indicates that the stations which can be heard have a relatively high 
  263. CTCSS deviation.

  265. I tried to cure the problem, but there are no related adjustments in the set for
  266. correcting this. 
  267. I verified the detector circuit (linearity) and also checked that the receiver
  268. frequency accuracy is correct. 
  269. Did anyone have similar problems with the C520 and the CTCSS circuit??
  270. What is the nominal CTCSS sensitivity for a receiver expressed in the deviation
  271. of the sub-tone??

  325. It's funny to read this subject line. I can recall back in the 60's
  326. when Wayne was at war with the ARRL, and how his editorials stirred
  327. folks up; people were cancelling their subscriptions back then.

  389. Thanks to all who have taken the trouble to tell me of HR's end.  I first saw 
  390. it at tech college just after I gained my novice ticket.  It was much more 
  391. interesting than the local mag's in vk at the time, and most of my lunch times 
  392. were spent reading HR.  I feel that I learnt a lot just by reading the 
  393. technical articles.

  395. As for vk mag's ...  we have "Electronics Australia", "Amateur Radio 
  396. Action", and the Wireless Institute of Australia's "Amateur Radio".  There are 
  397. the overseas pub's, of course, and probably some smaller mag's with which I'm 
  398. not familiar.  The following are purely my *opinions* ...
  399.  
  400. I first started reading EA as a kid in the late 60's.  It was full of articles 
  401. written by amateurs.  In the late 70's it turned into a "consumer electronics / 
  402. hi-fi amplifier and build-this-wonderful-LED-chaser-kit" type mag, and 
  403. subsequently lost my readership.  It has retained a leaning towards the 
  404. technical professional, and often features articles which range far and wide 
  405. over the electrical engineering disciplines.  The "new" editor (who was on 
  406. the staff back in the 60's) was recently following a policy of trying to bring 
  407. the amateurs back into the fold.
  408.  
  409. To me it appears that ARA tends to cater for the contester / dxer types.  It
  410. features some technical articles, although I've found some glaring errors in a 
  411. few. It also seems to do a roaring trade in rig reviews.  I rarely read it now.
  412.  
  413. In the last few years AR underwent a change whereby some issues are now
  414. absolutely packed with technical articles.  There is a general, broad
  415. technical content ranging from "how to" through "homebrew" to "theoretical" 
  416. -the majority of articles are in the former categories.  There seems to always 
  417. be an antenna article of some description, and over the years it has run some 
  418. good construction and theory / education sequences.  (I once saw an integral 
  419. operator in AR. :) ) It is a vast improvement on parts of the 80's when most 
  420. of the time I barely read it -despite being a member of the WIA.  It features 
  421. good columns run by dedicated mode enthusiasts, and often caters for the 
  422. humerous side as well.  As a WIA vehicle it deals with the politics / 
  423. regulatory / representative side of amateur radio, and provides a forum for 
  424. often-lively discussion.
